Zofia Chądzyńska
Zofia Chądzyńska (born February 24, 1912 in Warsaw , Russian Empire as Zofia Szymanowska, † September 23, 2003 in Warsaw) was a Polish writer and literary translator.
Life
Zofia Szymanowska attended the commercial academy and then worked in the Ministry of Education until 1934, from where she moved to the travel company Orbis . After the German occupation of Poland in 1940 she was imprisoned by the Gestapo in the Pawiak women's prison "Serbia" . Although she grew up Catholic in her family, she was at risk because of her Jewish origins, which she had to hide.
After the end of the war she married Bohdan Chądzyński, who received the post of consul of the People's Republic of Poland in Lyon . In Lyons they made friends with the doctor Jean Reverzy , whose novels she later translated into Polish. After the Communists came to power in Poland, the two emigrated to Argentina in 1949 . Her husband died in 1951. She ran a laundry in Buenos Aires and met Witold Gombrowicz in the Polish emigrant colony , who called her “Zosia”.
She returned to Poland in 1960, where her first novel was published in Polish. She translated the novel into French and published it in Paris in 1960 under the pseudonym Sophie Bohdan.
Chądzyńska wrote ten novels. In addition to Jean Reverzy, she has translated various South American authors into Polish from French, including Julio Cortázar , Jorge Luis Borges , José Donoso , Griselda Gambaro , Gabriel García Márquez and Roma Mahieu , as well as the British playwright Tom Kempinski . The Gombrowicz biography of Rita Gombrowicz was also translated from French by her.
