The girl Michiru Kita ( 紀 多 み ち る ) has the eyes of a Shinigami . As a result, she can read off the remaining lifetime of each person on a ring around the neck that is not visible to other people. This ring turns gray as soon as the time of death has been decided, and the darker the closer it is to death. If the ring is black, the person dies.

But Michiru sees black rings on her classmates Chika Akatsuki ( 赤 月 知 佳 ) and Shito Tachibana ( 橘 思 徒 ) without them dying. So she learns that the two of them made a pact with the Zombie Loan company when she died so that they can continue to live but have to hunt zombies. Because of the two who want to use Michiko's ability for their task, she also gets into fights with zombies again and again.

Anime

In 2007, Studio Xebec produced a 13-part anime television series based on the manga. Directed by Akira Nishimori , the concept was created by Atsuhiro Tomioka and the script was written by Yuka Yamada . The character design, which is very close to the original, comes from Chiharu Satō and the artistic direction was Norifumi Nakamura . For the adaptation, the narrative speed was increased compared to the manga. The plot mostly sticks closely to the original, but also deviates in details and less important scenes or subplot strands are omitted.

The first eleven episodes of the series were broadcast from July 4, 2007 to September 12, 2007 (after midnight and thus on the previous television day ) by TV Asahi in Japan. It was followed by repetitions with AT-X and Animax . The 12th and 13th episodes were only released on DVD. The anime was also broadcast on French and Spanish television and translated into Dutch. An English version was published on the Crunchyroll platform . The German translation was published by Anime-Virtual in 2009 on a total of 4 DVDs and was made available via streaming on Anime on Demand .

music

The music of the series, composed by Hiroyuki Sawano , is determined by violin sounds, spherical female chants and jazzy themes for the comic scenes. The opening credits were underlaid with the song Ōkami no Nodo by The Birthday, the closing title is Chain Ring by MUCC .

reception

The volumes sold around 30,000 each in Japan in the first few weeks. According to the German magazine Animania, the Manga stands out from other titles in the genre because of its " child-like, cute characters and the pretty bishones ". The page architecture is unusually strict and is rarely broken up. The content of the anime adaptation was an “ entertaining story and dealing with the taboo subject of death” . The treatment of philosophical topics, however, as well as the profound development of the characters, remains only brief and superficial. Some of the weird scenes looked out of place. The " actually good animations" lack dynamism in the rather rare action scenes and the design of the backgrounds and costumes is simple and " not very varied" . The background music is described as initially taking some getting used to for the audience, but overall successful. Opening and closing music are also praised, as is the German dubbing. Overall, the anime is recommended to genre fans as an “ entertaining mystery series” - fans of zombie films, on the other hand, tend not to.
