On Foot in the Clouds is a documentary film by DEFA Studio for Documentaries by Gunther Scholz from 1985 .

action

In the Jänschwalde lignite power plant , two fitters have to climb the three 300 meter high chimneys for inspection two to three times a year . A film team accompanies Micha and Herbert in this somewhat unusual activity.

The first intermediate station is reached after 75 meters. It is a platform with a railing that goes around the entire chimney. It's the first opportunity for a short break on this cold early October morning. Then it goes on to the next stage at a height of about 117.5 meters. At this point Micha explains that the concrete wall of the chimney is still 40 centimeters. The inner lining of the entire chimney consists of 15 million hard-fired bricks . There is also a flight warning light and a paint that fulfills the same task.

Around 120 rungs have to be managed between each of the six working platforms . On the 4th platform at a height of 207 meters you can see the whole power plant and the two workers explain to us what can be seen and what the tasks of the cooling towers and the electrostatic precipitators are. On the penultimate platform at a height of 252 meters, defective lamps must be replaced on the flight warning lighting. Then the last platform is climbed. Normally this ascent takes three hours for the fitters, but today they are already six hours on the road with the film people. The cameraman dares to look over the edge of the chimney, the inside diameter of which is still 15 meters. Now we take a break and eat a sausage with bread.

Production and publication

Walking in the clouds was conceived under the working title chimney climb for children and filmed on ORWO color. It had its first performance on June 7, 1985.

Between 2002 and 2007, the three chimneys of the Jänschwalde power plant were dismantled in an elaborate process, as they were no longer needed after renovation work in the plant.
