Juister Church To the Holy Guardian Angels (southeast view)

The name of the Roman Catholic Church on the East Frisian island of Juist belongs to the holy guardian angels . It was built in 1909/10 and expanded in 1960/61.

history

Before the Reformation and until the 19th century

The large island of Bant was located on the site of today's Juist island until at least the 11th century . Liudger , the Frisian missionary and later first bishop of the Münster diocese, preached there in 790 . The early organization of the church in all of East Frisia goes back to him. In 1271 Juist - at that time still a branch on Bant - was added to the diocese of Bremen , after tradition has it that the way to the diocese capital of Münster was made very difficult by the break in of the Dollart . In connection with the cession of East Frisia to the Kingdom of Hanover after the Congress of Vienna in 1814/1815, Juist was finally assigned to the Diocese of Osnabrück . The vast majority of the island's inhabitants were Protestant at that time , after the East Frisian Count Enno II Cirksena had pushed through the Reformation in 1540 . As a result, the church, which was first built with bricks around 1450, was rededicated for Protestant worship. For the further history of the Protestant church buildings on Juist see Inselkirche Juist .

From the end of the 19th century

Since the last third of the 19th century, more and more Catholics from the Rhenish and Westphalian regions came to the island of Juist as holidaymakers. They came from the wealthy bourgeoisie , which emerged in the founding years after 1870. At that time there were only a handful of Catholics among the Juister residents. From around 1895, Catholic masses were celebrated by guest priests in a restaurant room in the Hotel Rose (today Nordseehotel Freese). In 1901 a "Catholic Beach Club" was founded as a church building association and provided the financial basis for the construction of a chapel. In 1906 the Diocese of Osnabrück got involved in the planning and was able to obtain a free piece of land from the Juist community. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in the autumn of 1909 and the first trade fair was celebrated in the new building on June 26, 1910. In view of a number of children's holiday homes on the island you chose the Guardian Angels - patronage .

In the years and decades that followed, the church's furnishings (altar, bell, window, fresco) were constantly expanded. It was used intensively by priestly guests from the neighboring Pax guest house, so that there were six side altars in addition to the main altar . In 1960/61 the round west apse with a gallery was added. In 1974 the choir was redesigned as a result of the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council . A bronze way of the cross and a baptismal font have complemented the furnishings since 1983 and 1984 respectively . In 1994 a new sacristy and a stair tower were added to the west to connect with the new parish hall (built in 2000/2001). The old sacristy in the northeast corner of the building has been the sacrament chapel since then . 1997/1999 new windows were installed. The interior was extensively renovated in 2010 and 2015/16 (gallery, chairs, paintwork, electrics).

architecture

Coffered ceiling in the church

The 1910 completed church is a brick - Saalbau in simple neo-Romanesque forms. Two short transept arms are added to the east, of which the southern one carries the small tower with the bells. The round apse is set off from the church with a wall arch.

In 1961, an extension in the form of a semi- rotunda with a gallery was added in the west , the diameter of which exceeds the width of the old church. With its ribbon of windows under the eaves , small round windows at medium height and vertical concrete struts between the brick fields, it shapes the appearance of the church today.

Bells

After the planned west tower was not implemented, the small south flank tower was set up as a bell tower. In 1911 the Otto bell foundry donated a small, beautifully decorated baroque bell from their warehouse. Her antiquain script running around her shoulder mentions, among other things, the year of casting in 1764 and the foundryman Johann Fuchs von Köln. Almost a hundred years later, a donation made it possible to renovate the bell system and add a second, somewhat larger bell . This was cast in the bell foundry Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock in Gescher, Westphalia and bears an inscription in capital letters around the shoulder:

SEE, MY ANGEL SHALL GO BEFORE YOU .

Both bells hang on top of each other in a wooden belfry on wooden yokes, with which the bell chamber is completely filled. The bell is coordinated with that of the island church . The ringing order includes:

  • Angelus ringing: daily at 8 a.m., 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. (together with the island church) with three times three strikes and subsequent ringing of the small bell,
  • Vespers: about 10 minutes before the start with the little bell,
  • Weekday masses: about 15 minutes before the start with the little bell,
  • Sunday and public holiday masses: around 15 minutes before the start with both bells, even for festivities on weekdays.
