Zum Kuckuck mit der Liebe is a German TV film by Hajo Gies from 2012 .

action

Gottlieb Dobisch once founded the first cuckoo clock factory in northern Germany. He died and his wife Leonore continued to run the company. Now, 22 years later, a delegation from the Black Forest is announced to test the quality of the watches. Leonore does everything to finally get the desired association seal, which her husband was denied all her life. When, after decades, this longed-for goal is within reach, the family business is in great excitement. Leonore, who is in poor health, entrusts her daughter-in-law Katrin, who is married to Anton, the youngest of her two sons, to take care of the organization of the visit of the delegation from the Cuckoo Clock Association. She is also supposed to give the inaugural speech, which her sister-in-law Greta, who also works in the company, doesn't like at all. But suddenly Katrin gets self-doubt and fear of failure and books a rhetoric course in Hamburg . The family doctor friend, Dr. Ingo Leuwerik, however, recommends that she do this in secret, so as not to unnecessarily worry her mother-in-law, who has a heart condition. Thus the reason for the trip to Hamburg is the visit of an uncle from America who wants to meet with his niece.

In Hamburg, Katrin meets her language trainer Hubertus Hobbs, who, however, is extremely unstable and numbs his private problems with alcohol every evening. Despite initial differences of opinion, she ends up sleeping with him, but then quickly leaves the city and returns to the unsuspecting Lothar. The family idyll is clouded, however, because the local town hall cuckoo clock, which Gottlieb Dobisch gave the city as a gift 30 years ago, had a malfunction just since the time of Katrin's affair. Anton now has his hands full to get his father's masterpiece working again. Meanwhile, Katrin not only has a guilty conscience, but also a problem, because Hubertus Hobbs has followed her. Without further ado, she introduces the husband to her family as her uncle from America. Only her envious sister-in-law Greta is certain that this cannot be true. She had her husband Lothar, jealous of Katrin's reputation with Leonore, instructed to follow to Hamburg to spy on her. Based on her research, she knows that Hobbs lives in Hamburg and gives rhetoric courses. She has now lured him here with a ruse and hopes that he will compromise Katrin. However, this only partially succeeds, because Hobbs comes out on the first evening and claims to have come to continue teaching Katrin.

Leonore is not happy about the secrecy of her daughter-in-law, but she is quite impressed by her determination to perfect her speech. There are now only five days left before the delegation arrives. Anton is now working continuously on the town hall clock and Katrin has to meet Hobbs, whether or not, because Leonore is now demanding that. Hobbs wants to fight for Katrin because he feels that she is not really happy. He's a little right about that, because she doesn't know what she really wants anymore: the somewhat boring but orderly life with Anton, or the chaotic and erratic existence of Hobbs. In the midst of this conflict of conscience, Anton's older brother Lothar and his wife also uncover the infidelity. Leonore is about to throw Katrin out of the family. In her need, Katrin flees to Hobbs, who can no longer watch her emotional conflict and calls her husband. He appears in reinforcement with Dr. Leuwerik, who was always by the family's side in such emergency situations. Anton fights Katrin back with a punch against Hobbs, which impresses her very much and immediately drives her back to the company with Anton. They arrive there just in time for the delegation to arrive. Katrin gives her speech and the cuckoo clock runs smoothly again, thanks to Anton. Only when adjusting the call, Anton probably made a mistake, because just when Leonore returned the seal of the association to the chairman, because he thought it was no longer needed, the cuckoo suddenly crows (!) From the tower and everyone has to laugh.

Reviews

“What could you not tell everything with these actors !?” Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv asked himself and went on to write: “Instead, one crooked comedy twist gives the next one. Not only some characters, but also the script is not ticking properly. Everything just seems thought out. There is no clarity in this plot, only the hope that with a touch of 'Amélie', with a little romance, a few half-hearted meaning-of-life objections and with some typically German clothes, you can win over the TV viewer. To the cuckoo with the German comedy! "

Julian Miller fromquotemeter.de “It quickly becomes clear which rules this script was put together. Dramaturgical instinct seems to be irrelevant, meaningful arcs of tension were found to be unnecessary. It's about fate, about feeling, about being confused. The fact that the story that one tries to tell is completely illogical from the start and does not make any sense does not seem to have interested anyone at Degeto. "

Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung wrote: “The well-known cast [...] gets enough to play. But at some point the viewer no longer understands the characters because of all the false ticks. And then the question of all television questions looms: Why this film of all places? The most disarming answer to that would be: Just for fun. But there is simply not enough to laugh and cry in this cloud cuckoo country. It's not a comedy, not a romantic drama, but something half-cooked in between. Just like inside a cuckoo clock, even the best individual parts have to fit together in a film. "

On the other hand, the Lexicon of International Films had a positive impression . It rated the film as a "turbulent (TV) family comedy about jealousy and resentment, borne by sympathy for its protagonists and their human weaknesses."

Tilmann P. Gangloff for Kino.de gave a similar verdict and rated the film as: “A drama that is staged with a light hand and cleverly disguised as a comedy, in which melancholy never prevails.” “Gies tells the multi-layered plot with a lot of joy in the characters Some of which have bizarre features, but are nonetheless lovable. "" The contemplative pages that do exist are so cleverly integrated that the story never becomes melancholy, especially since the events really get rolling after the prologue. "
