The Church of the Divine Providence ( Polish Kościół pw. Opatrzności Bożej ) is a building erected in the first half of the 19th century. Until 1945 it was a Protestant church for the then East Prussian Groß Stürlack and is now a Roman Catholic parish church in Sterławki Wielkie, Poland .

Geographical location

Sterławki Wielkie is located in the north-east of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in the Gmina Ryn (Rhine) area . The place is a train station on the Głomno – Białystok railway line . City consumption leads the 642 provincial road in the province road DW 592 , the former German Reich Straße 135 . Not far from here, in a south-easterly direction, the church stands on a slight hill.

In Gross Stürlack there was already a chapel in the pre-Reformation period , which - dedicated to John the Baptist - was inaugurated in 1490 by Bishop Lukas Watzenrode on the initiative of Johann von Tiefen , Grand Master of the Teutonic Order .

After the Reformation in East Prussia in 1590, the chapel was replaced by a church, which in 1598 was elevated to a parish church . After being destroyed by the Tatars in 1657, the church was rebuilt. In the 19th century, however, the building had to be demolished because it was in disrepair.

In 1832, it was by a hall church in framework construction to be replaced. The building design was based on designs by Karl Friedrich Schinkel . The 38 meter high tower was added in 1884 and the apse was added in the same year .

The interior, with its classicist style, is simply designed. The altarpiece "Jesus in Gethsemane" has survived to this day. The once on the north wall beside the Sakristei established pulpit is eliminated. The 18th century crucifix is now placed over the chancel, and the brass bowl from the second half of the 17th century is still used for baptism today .

The case of the organ from 1866 is on the west gallery. The instrument has been restored several times.

The church survived the two world wars in the 20th century almost unscathed. In 1946 the church was given to the Roman Catholic Church in Poland . She consecrated it as the Church of Divine Providence. Multiple renovations were necessary. Today the building is in fair condition.

Pastor

Among the evangelical pastors was Leopold Gregorovius (1809-1852), a member of the Corps Masovia .

Parish

Before 1945 there was no Catholic church in Groß Stürlack. After Rastenburg ( Polish : Kętzryn ), the village was incorporated into the local parish church of St. Catherine, which belonged to the Masurian dean's office II (seat in Johannisburg , Polish Pisz) in the Diocese of Warmia .

Due to the flight and expulsion of the local, mostly Protestant, population , new citizens from Poland settled, almost without exception Catholic denominations. The Protestant house of God was assigned to them as a church.

This ended a period of more than 350 years as a Protestant church building. The few Protestant church members set up a house in Sterławki Wielkie as a chapel.

In 1950 the church was elevated to a parish church . The parish is now part of the deanery św. Szczepana Męczennika Giżycko in the Diocese of Ełk (Lyck) of the Roman Catholic Church in Poland .
