Zuriel Oduwole (born 2002 in Los Angeles ) is a Nigerian - American activist and filmmaker. She is known as the youngest filmmaker in the world and is known for her commitment to girls' education in Africa.

life and work

Zuriel Oduwole grew up with her three younger siblings in Los Angeles. Her father is from Nigeria, her mother from Mauritius . Her parents have her home schooling .

Zuriel Oduwole gained her first experience in filmmaking at the age of nine in a school competition. Because she wanted to make a film about the history of Ghana , she wrote a letter to former Ghanaian President Jerry Rawlings asking him to tell her about his own experiences for the project. Rawlings then invited them to Ghana. Zuriel Oduwole's first documentary, The Ghana Revolution , emerged from their conversation . Since then, Oduwole has interviewed numerous other heads of state from African and Caribbean countries, top politicians from Africa, the USA and Europe and other well-known personalities such as civil rights activist Jesse Jackson , entrepreneur Aliko Dangote , athletes Venus and Serena Williams and Holocaust survivor Eva Haller .

In 2014 - Oduwole was now 12 years old - her documentary A Promising Africa (A Brighter Nigeria) premiered in London . It is the first part of a five-part series about Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa , Tanzania and Mauritius. The film was also shown in Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and Japan . This makes Oduwole the youngest person to have commercially released a self-produced film.

It is Oduwole's declared aim to convey a positive image of Africa with her documentaries.

Political commitment

Zuriel Oduwole founded the Dream Up, Speak Up, Stand Up campaign in Lagos in March 2013 , with which she campaigns for better educational opportunities for African girls. The organization supports school projects in Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Ethiopia , Maritius, Tanzania and Malawi . For the 2014 World Cup , she expanded the campaign to Brazil and the USA. In April 2014, Oduwole gave her first political speech at the First Lady's Colloquy on Education , to which First Ladies from African states and states are invited to discuss girls' education in Africa.

Zuriel Oduwole's sisters Azaliah and Arielle participate in some of their public appearances and film projects.

Oduwole also deals with the connection between education and climate change and is committed to climate protection . In 2017 she was invited to the UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn to give a lecture and moderate a discussion for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change . At 15, she was the youngest person ever to be officially invited to a UN climate conference.

Media coverage

In 2013 New African magazine included Zuriel Oduwole in its list of the "100 Most Influential People in Africa". She was the youngest person to ever get a place on the list. That same year, she was featured in Forbes Magazine - also as the youngest person in the magazine's history . In 2014, Business Insider magazine named Oduwole the most powerful 11-year-old on their list of “World's Most Powerful Person at Every Age”. In 2015 Elle magazine named her one of the "33 Women Who Changed the World". The magazine New African Woman awarded Oduwole the young talent of the "New African Woman Award" ("New African Woman On The Rise").
