Do Aankhen Barah Haath ( Hindi दो आँखें बारह हाथ ; translated: two eyes, twelve hands ) is a socially critical Hindi film by V. Shantaram from 1957, which was selected by the India Times among the 25 Must See Bollywood Movies .

action

The idealistic guard Adinath believes that every human being is fundamentally good and takes six murderers to a barren field to use for agricultural purposes.

They build a small farm and come into conflict with the righteous citizens of the nearby village, who see their economic interests threatened. There are protests against the criminals.

Mindfulness pervades when the guard allows a prisoner's children to be kept with him. The children and the toy seller Champa help the prisoners to become people who respect people and become responsible citizens.

Finally they are tested: When their small field is to be bought up by a vegetable wholesaler, they promise to abstain from acts of violence. They finish their work and can thus regain their freedom.

Reviews

Two thousand and one : Despite considerable cuts in the German distribution version, Shantaram's film parable is a remarkable example of social commitment and narrative fantasy in Indian post-war cinema.

Stylized parable about human virtues.

Others

V. Shantaram and Sandhya were married in real life.

A 124-minute version of the film was shown at the 1958 San Francisco International Film Festival .

The subject of the rehabilitation of criminals was filmed in 1931 in the film "The Way to Life" directed by Nikolai Ekk based on a script by Anton Semjonowitsch Makarenko . The similarities to “Two Eyes - Twelve Hands” are certainly no coincidence.
