The second landscape edition (also landscape pictures ) is a definitive series of Austria , which was published from 1945 to 1948, was valid for all occupation zones and was valid for postage in the variants with color change until June 30, 2002. Each stamp shows an Austrian landscape or an Austrian building.

Drafting and printing

Savings gum at the value of 30 groschen

The stamps were designed by Alfred Chmielowski (born April 22, 1896 in Olomouc , † June 23, 1967 in Vienna) and produced in the Austrian State Printing House. The rotogravure printing process was used for the editions . The stamps were printed in sheets of 100 and perforated for separation.

Due to the lack of raw materials, savings were also made on the rubber coating, which is known as a so-called economy rubber coating .

particularities

Since there was a landscape edition for Austria as early as 1929, this definitive series is referred to as the Second Landscape Edition.

The stamps were also provided with overprints as special stamps or surcharge stamps. On June 25, 1946, there was an issue with a surcharge on the Day of the United Nations League and on September 26, 1946, a special stamp was issued for the Congress of the Society for the Maintenance of the Cultural and Economic Relationship of the Soviet Union. On September 1, 1947, there were overprints with a new face value.

In 1947 there was a color change due to the currency reform of 1947 . For reasons of time and costs, new definitive stamps were not used, but the existing motifs with color changes continued to be used.

In 1948 this edition was replaced by the second costume series .

Market value

Since this series has not been in use for very long, the supply is not as high as for the following definitive series. The two definitive stamps from 1945 and 1947 can be found together in the cheapest types at online auctions for around 15 euros and mint condition for around 30 euros.

Due to the large variety of colors, paper types and plate defects, this series is very popular with philatelists.

Stamps with the Austria Netto catalog numbers from 767 to 770 were made with plates and have a coarse grid that can be seen with a magnifying glass, where one speaks of line intaglio. From August 1946 onwards, these stamps were made finer with rollers (rotary printing) using the so-called doctor blade gravure printing and the screen is therefore no longer visible. They are listed in the Austria Netto catalog as separate issues with the numbers 771 to 774 and are cataloged together in the Michel catalog.
