The dwarf tongue ( Buglossidium luteum ) is an asymmetrically built flatfish with eyes on the right side of the body. It is the only species in the genus Buglossidium ; It can be found in the North Atlantic from Iceland and Norway to Gibraltar and in the Mediterranean.
features
Like all sole, the dwarf tongue is strongly flattened on the sides and has an elongated and elongated oval body. It reaches a maximum length of 13 centimeters, making it a very small flatfish. The eyes are both on the right flank of the body, while the fish usually lies with its left side on the bottom of the water. There are between 55 and 70 scales along the sidelines .
The basic color of the eye side is sand-colored with regularly distributed dark spots. The left half of the body ( blind side ) is white to gray. The dorsal fin starts far in front of the eyes on the head, just like the anal fin , every sixth or seventh fin ray is dark in color. The dorsal fin has 63 to 77 and the anal fin 50 to 64 fin rays. The pectoral fin on the eye side is small and has 3 to 5 rays, the blind side is completely reduced.
distribution
The dwarf tongue lives on the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean from Iceland and Norway to Gibraltar as well as in the Mediterranean , the North Sea and the western Baltic Sea . It lives mainly on sandy coasts at depths of up to 250 meters.
Way of life
The dwarf tongue primarily prey on small crustaceans such as copepods and amphipods , molluscs and bristle worms . The spawning season extends from July to August, during which the eggs are released in the shallow water and swim in the pelagic due to stored oil droplets . The symmetrically built fry hatch after five to six days and are around 2 to 2.4 millimeters long.

The dwarf tongue is the only species of the genus Buglossidium within the sole (Soleidae).
