Sahmyook University was founded as a small, Seventh-day Adventist school called Euimyung College in 1906. In 1949, the school moved from Suahn Pyungan-namdo and joined with the head church in Hoegi, Seoul. Because of the Korean War, the school was temporarily closed in 1950. After Seoul was won back in November 1951, the school was relocated to the current location, Gongdeok, yangjoo, Gyeonggi (later, it was changed to Seoul Metropolitan). The school was also renamed Sahmyook College, and the minister Jemyung Lee was inaugurated as the first president.
On June 25, 1950, the Korean War forced the school to close again. After Seoul was won back in November 1951, the school was relocated to its current location at Gongdeok, Yangjoo, Gyeonggi (later renamed Seoul) and reopened. The school was also renamed Sahmyook College, and the minister, James Lee, was inaugurated as the first president.

Applications
The school continued to grow slowly through the late 20th century. In the 1971s, Eliya Hall, the current location of the 100th Anniversary Hall, was built as the administration building.
Each January, over 10,000 students apply at Sahmyook University. Only about 10 percent, or 1,242, of them (mostly non-Adventists) are accepted as new students. Non-Adventists have a higher ratio of successful applications compared with Adventist students. The number of Adventist students annually accepted is around 200, or about 1 in 6.<ref name="Adventist World">"Fishing for Souls". From 1977 to 1988, the undergraduate school was steadily reorganized into the school of Nursing, Business, Pharmacy, Nutrition, Chemistry, and Music.

Sahmyook was the first co-educational university and the first to establish dormitories. It was also the first university to have fibre optic cables laid to its campus.

Campus
Sahmyook University is located in Gong-neung, Seoul, a 20 minutes drive from Seoul Station. It is near Hwarang-ro with views of hundreds of ginkgo trees. Teanung, Gong-neung, and the Korea Military Academy serve as a green-belt between the campus and the city. These natural surroundings allow the university to be ranked as one of the top 10 most beautiful universities each year.

The campus maintains a variety of indigenous trees, especially around the quad in the center of the campus. The campus is composed of 16 faculty buildings, the university church, the centennial hall, three faculty residence halls and four apartment complexes.

The four dormitories on campus are the men's hall, the women's hall, Sinhack Hall, and the graduate student's hall, primarily for men who are either graduate or seminary students. The residence halls restrict access depending on a student's age, as well as a visitation policy which does not permit students of the opposite gender in dormitory rooms at any time.

The campus is between Seoul and Gyeonggi. The School of Pharmacy and Nursing, and the residential community of the university is not within the city limits, however remains officially within the Seoul district.

* Taegangneung: The Taereung (泰陵) is the royal tomb of Queen Munjeong (文定王后, 1501-1565) from the Yun family. She was the second lawful wife of the 11th King Jungjong of the Joseon Dynasty. King Jungjong and Queen Munjeong had one son and four daughters, including King Myeongjong. When King Myeongjong ascended the throne at the age of 12, Queen Munjeong ruled as regent for eight years. Making her younger brother, Yun Wonhyeong, stand in the forefront, she stirred up the Eulsasahwa (乙巳士禍, a massacre of scholars) and the Jeongmisahwa (丁未士禍, a massacre of scholars caused by a rebellious writing on the wall of the Yangjae station), and executed many scholars. She also made an effort to rehabilitate Buddhism with the high priest Bou (普雨) taking the lead.

Criticism of the Seventh-day Adventist Church

The university and its church has received criticism along several lines, including its allegedly heterodox doctrines, in relation to Ellen G. White and her status within the church, and in relation to alleged exclusivist attitudes and behaviour. Many high profile critics of the church are former Adventists, such as D. M. Canright, Walter Rea and Dale Ratzlaff.

By the mid 1970s, two distinct factions were manifest within Seventh day Adventism. Defending many pre-1950 Adventist positions was Traditional Adventism, while Evangelical Adventism emphasized the Reformation understanding of justification by faith, and sought greater fellowship with Evangelical Christianity. This controversy soon led to a full-blown internal crisis and fragmentation. By the early 1980s, severe denominational discipline was enacted against certain evangelical Adventist leaders, and which left many Adventists disillusioned "From Controversy to Crisis: An Updated Assessment of Seventh-day Adventism] by by Kenneth R. Samples, Christian Research Institute Journal.

Several distinctive Adventist doctrines have been identified as heterodox by critics. Adventists have often been accused of legalism, because of their emphasis on law-keeping and strict Sabbath-observance.

Sahmyook University (Korean: 삼육대학교, Hanja: 三育大學校) is a private, Christian, coeducational university located in Nowon-gu, Seoul, South Korea. Sahmyook University is part of a worldwide network of Seventh-day Adventist institutions of higher education.

The school was founded in 1906 as Euimyung College in Sunahn, Pyeongan-namdo in what would become today's North Korea. It is today the largest university owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church.[1]

As of 2016, the university had 6 colleges, including the College of Theology, Humanities & Social Science and Health Science & Social Welfare in addition to 4 graduate schools.

History[edit]

Establishment of a mission college[edit]

Sahmyook University was founded in 1906 as a small, Seventh-day Adventist school called "Euimyung College" by American Seventh-day Adventist missionaries, with the objective to improve the education of church workers in Korea.[2]

However, while under the rule of Japanese imperialism, the missionaries stopped managing the whole school system due to Shinto worship being enforced by the Japanese rulers.[2] Thus, the school remained closed until the end of the Second World War. After Korea gained its independence from Japan in 1945, the school moved from Sunan and joined with the church headquarters Hoegi, Seoul; The move was completed in 1949.[2]

Applications[edit]

Each January, over 10,000 students apply at Sahmyook University. Only about 10 percent, or 1,242, of them (mostly non-Adventists) are accepted as new students. Non-Adventists have a higher ratio of successful applications compared with Adventist students. The number of Adventist students annually accepted is around 200, or about 1 in 6.[1]
