The Hankuk University of Foreign Languages (short form HUFS from the English name Hankuk University of Foreign Studies ) is a private university with two locations in Seoul and Yongin , South Korea . The university was founded in 1954 as the first university specializing in foreign language education in South Korea.
According to a ranking by the South Korean daily JoongAng Ilbo, the university is currently one of the ten best universities in South Korea.
history
Hankuk University of Foreign Languages was founded by entrepreneur Kim Heung-bae. He recognized the need for foreign language education for the country devastated in the Korean War . Kim initially established the Dongwon Education Foundation in 1952 to provide a legal and financial basis for establishing a university. In January 1954 the establishment was approved and on April 20, 1954 the Hankuk University for Foreign Languages opened. The college consisted of five departments for English, French, Chinese, German and Russian and was headed by a dean.
The Hankuk University of Foreign Languages was the first South Korean university to specialize in foreign language training. In 1955 the Spanish Department was established. Until then, the university used temporary accommodation in an office building in Jongno 2-ga. In September 1957, she moved into the newly established Seoul campus in Imun-dong. In 1958, the first 133 graduates graduated from Hankuk University of Foreign Languages.
In September 1979 the university set up a branch in Yongin in the Gyeonggi-do province near the capital , which is now the Global Campus. In October 1980 it received the status of a full university with the colleges of Occidental Languages, Oriental Languages, Law , Economics , Education and Natural Sciences . More language sections were added over the years: in 2008, two new language sections for Mongolian and Ukrainian were established.
Locations
The university facilities of the HUFS are divided into two locations: the Seoul campus, the main location and the global campus in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do . The Seoul campus has been located in Imun-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, an eastern part of Seoul, since 1957.
The Global Campus was founded in 1979 as the Yongin Campus. Founded as a branch school of the university, it now has its own academic profile.
