"Beautiful Liar"
Song

"Beautiful Liar" is a R&B/Latin pop song recorded by American singer Beyoncé and Colombian singer Shakira. The song was written by Beyoncé, Amanda Ghost, Ian Dench, and Norwegian songwriters Mikkel S. Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen, and was the first single from the deluxe rerelease of Beyoncé's second studio album B’Day, making it the fifth song (fourth outside the U.S.) released from B'Day. The song was produced by production team Stargate and Beyoncé, and was mixed by Gustavo Celis. It has versions in Spanish and English. It holds the distinction of having the largest upward movement on the Billboard Hot 100, moving 91 positions from 94 to 3 the week of April 7 2007.[1]

Background

The duet had been confirmed by Beyoncé in an interview with Univision in December 2006.[2] In a recent MTV interview, she described how she had met Shakira several times at various awards shows over the recent years. After recording the Latin-themed song solo, Beyoncé approached her to appear on it; Shakira willingly accepted.[3]

Beyoncé has stated that the song is about female empowerment, in keeping with the theme of the album.[4] The protagonists sing about being charmed by the same man; instead of fighting over him, they decide not to start a drama or waste their time.

The original Spanglish version featured Beyoncé singing solo, and this leaked onto the internet in late 2006. However the duet version was recorded (in separate languages for the two different language versions) on January 23 2007 in Miami by Gustavo Celis. By February 27 2007 it had leaked on to the Internet. The single started playing on the radio just after the video was premiered on MTV's Total Request Live and BET's 106 and Park on February 28 2007. It premiered on the same day as Beyoncé's other single, "Upgrade U". The song was made available on iTunes on March 20 2007.

Chart performance

After a short period on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart, "Beautiful Liar" debuted at number 94 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In its second week, the song jumped 91 positions to number three, setting a record for the largest upward movement in the history of the Hot 100 chart.[1] On the Billboard Pop 100 chart the song also jumped seventy-four places, from number seventy-seven to number three. "Beautiful Liar" also became one of very few songs to debut at number one on both the Hot Digital Tracks and Hot Digital Songs charts.[4] The songs currently sits at number twenty-two on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart, thirty-six on the Rhythmic Top 40, and at thirty-eight on the Top 40 Mainstream charts. On the international charts, "Beautiful Liar" has performed well. The song has peaked at number twenty-six on the Dutch Top 40, and at number 11 on the Swedish Singles charts. It also debuted at number eight on the United World Charts.[5]

In Latin America the song debuted at number ninety-five at the Ibero-America Top 100 the twelfth week of 2007 counting points also for the Spanglish version.[6]

In the United Kingdom, the song made its debut on the UK Singles Chart at number ten, based solely on digital downloads, two weeks before the CD release, making it both Beyoncé's and Shakira's highest debut on the UK Singles Chart on digital downloads alone.[7]

Music video

Shakira (left) and Beyoncé (right) in the video.

The video was helmed by Jake Nava, who directed several other Beyoncé videos such as "Crazy in Love", "Baby Boy", "Naughty Girl", and Destiny's Child's "Cater 2 U".

At the start of the video the women's faces are masked by smoke. As the video progresses they are featured against several different backgrounds, including: dawn (Beyoncé) and dusk (Shakira); sheets blown in the wind; bamboo covered in yellow orchids; a room with blue neon lighting and Semitic looking writing on the walls; and finally a background of stormy weather. Slow dance moves and belly dancing are featured heavily throughout the video, with a breakdown after the bridge. The women wear matching hairstyles and black dresses for the entirety of video.

The video premiered on February 28 2007 (the same day as the video for "Upgrade U") on 106 & Park and on TRL. The next day, the video debuted on TRL's countdown at number six.[8][9] The video has since reached the number one position six times.

The music video for the song will be released on Beyoncé's B'Day Anthology Video Album.
