The silver version of the new PSP Slim & Lite

At E3 2007, Sony released information about a new version of the PlayStation Portable, known as the PSP Slim & Lite.[1][2] The new PSP will be 33% lighter (reduced to 189 grams from 280 grams) and 19% slimmer than the original PSP system. The model numbers have changed to PSP-2000, following the previous region-based numbering scheme (cf. the PSP-1000 numbering scheme of the "old" PSP model).

Redesign specifications

New hardware features are as follows:

  • Better Wi-Fi conection.
  • Faster loading times by storing UMD data in temporary memory.
  • Internal memory (RAM) increase from 32 MB to 64 MB.
  • Improved battery life due to lower power consumption, and battery recharge over the USB data connection. However the old, higher-capacity PSP battery will still be compatible and using it will give an increased battery life, but the battery cover will not close when using the old battery due to the larger size.
  • Weight has been reduced by 33%.
  • Unit is 19% narrower (slimmer) in thickness.
  • A video-out port for displaying on a TV.
  • Improved responsiveness of d-pad[3] and buttons, confirmed in the GameSpot "hands-on" review: "several GameSpot editors have noticed that the d-pad and buttons on the new PSP provide a little more tactile feedback for a better overall feel."[4]
  • Wi-Fi switch moved to the top of the console.
  • New UMD loading tray design.
  • Removal of the infra-red port.
  • Speakers repositioned on the front of the PSP near the top of the screen.
  • Memory Stick slot has been relocated.

Pricing and hardware

The announced price is set at $169.99 for the Core Pack and $199.99 for the newer PSP entertainment packages. The original version of the PSP is also set to be priced at $169.99, until they are sold out, although some stores may lower the price as a clearout sale to try and sell all of their PSP systems more rapidly. The PSP Slim will sell for EUR 169.99, and the two special limited edition ones cost EUR 199.99. Production of the original design is already halted, and by the time the new design launches (according to Sony's speculations), the older designs should be sold out. In a demo video of the new device from E3, the slim PSP was seen to be running firmware version 3.60, which was not available for the standard PSP. This fueled speculation that the 3.60 firmware update might include features talked about at E3, such as a DLNA client. and clint is gay

In North America, the Piano Black Core Pack will be released on September 10, the Ice Silver Daxter Pack on September 5, and the Star Wars Ceramic White on October 9 2007.[7]. The PSP Slim & Lite has still not been released in many major electronic stores in Italy for instance Media World the PSP Slim & Lite will hit the shelves in the middle of September. The date is still unknown. The cause of this late arrival could be the store waiting for advertisements or sony postponed the stockings of the highly anticipated PSP Slim & Lite for unknown reasons, which left many gamers disappointed and angry at the promise of a September 14th arrival.

TV output

Sony has added a TV output for the PSP Slim available through PSP Firmware 3.60. Price for the TV output device hasn't been confirmed yet. The PSP can output standard resolution (4:3), and widescreen (16:9). It also offers a screensaver if the PSP is inactive for a set amount of time. It is able to output games, videos, and other media. The component or D-link cable is needed for viewing games on a TV (Progressive Scan Enabled TV only).

Homebrew

Current downgraders, homebrew enablers, and other exploits will not be able to run on the new PSP's Firmware which is 3.60[8], early tests find out that the current "Pandora's Battery" exploit is incompatible.[9] The Undiluted Platinum modification chip also will not be able to be installed because of the new motherboard layout.
