The Xperia X1 is an unreleased smartphone from Sony Ericsson, the first in the manufacturer's Xperia series. Upon its release in the third quarter of 2008,^[3]. The X1 first was presented at the 2008 Mobile World Congress.

Basics

The X1 is a horizontal slider phone based on Windows Mobile 6.1 Operating System. It is Sony Ericsson's first mobile phone to feature Windows Mobile.^[4]

The phone features a three-inch touchscreen overlaying a QWERTY keypad which emerges when the user slides the touchscreen face upward, much as in the HTC TyTN II, although the X1's touchscreen slides out in an arc. Its touchscreen is a 65,536-color TFT WVGA display. It has a 3.2 megapixel digital camera which records video at thirty frames per second in VGA (640x480) quality. There is also a secondary front facing camera for videoconferencing that is of QCIF format. It features a variety of connectivity options: mini-USB; wireless LAN 802.11b/g; Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, FTP, and HID; EDGE; and quad-band GSM, UMTS, HSDPA, HSUPA, and HSCSD. The X1 has 400MB internal memory, which is expandable to 32 gigabytes using High Capacity microSD cards, although currently only cards up to 16 gigabytes have been released by SanDisk.^[5] The phone also features A-GPS for navigation.^[6]

Due to the restrictions of Windows mobile, the phone will be the first business phone by Sony Ericsson which is not able to utilize the GSM network feature Alternate line service.

Standard features on the X1 will include push email, an RSS feed aggregator, and handwriting recognition.

The device is powered by Qualcomm's ARM 11 MSM7200A CPU, which runs at 528Mhz. It has 256MB of RAM.

The "home" screen of the Xperia X1 is comprised of nine panels displayed simultaneously, which the user can customize. The interface is arranged in a 3D effect which works whenever the user has activated the landscape mode or has tapped on a window. The interface virtually stands on top of the User Interface platform.

The X1 is navigated by using either the touchscreen, the QWERTY keyboard, a 4-direction navigation key, or an "optical joystick." As a Windows Mobile device, the touchscreen is fully capable of navigating the entire user interface.

The phone also features a unique "touch-autofocus" function, which enables the user to tap on a certain focus position on the screen. The touch-autofocus takes advantage of its 3.0" WVGA display.

Multimedia software

The Xperia X1 includes some multimedia software found on Sony Ericcson's UIQ/A200-based handsets, including Media Center and FM Radio with RDS and track recognition. For content downloads, the phone has access to PlayNow 5.0. The X1 uses Windows Media Player as its main multimedia application. It also features a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Battery

A Lithium-Polymer, 1500 mAh battery is included in the Xperia. This battery is one of the largest batteries ever provided in any 3G phone, and boasts from 833 hours of stand-by time, up to 10 hours of talk time.
