"With Love"
Song

"With Love" is an electronic pop song written by Hilary Duff, Vada Nobles and Kara DioGuardi, released as the second single from Duff's fourth studio album, Dignity. It was released to U.S. radio on February 19, 2007 (see 2007 in music)[3] and is the first second single from a Duff album released before the album. The song was added to iTunes by March 13.

Reception

It premiered on January 25, 2007, on the Los Angeles and Orange County radio station 102.7 KIIS-FM, with Ryan Seacrest.[4] In mid-February more Top 40 radio stations were adding the song to their playlists than any other song.[5] By March 16, the song had reached number thirty-one (31) on the U.S. Mediabase Top 40 radio chart.[6] It has garnered airplay in Canada, peaking at number nineteen on the Canadian Top 40 chart as of March 25 2007.[7] The single has peaked at number two on the WorldSpace Satellite Radio chart as well, as of March 2 2007.[8] The single has peaked at twelve on XM Radio's 20 on 20.[citation needed]

"With Love" received a positive review from Chuck Taylor of Billboard, who stated that "With Love" is "a beat-happy track that delivers a propulsive, guitar-laden, bleep-heavy hook that serves to reinvent the appealing singer as a boogie diva."[9] It was also well received by Bill Lamb of About.com, who said the track included "hand-clapping and finger-snapping beats" and was one that was destined for the top ten; he said it had no "major" negatives at all.[10] A review from Newsround called it a track that "Kylie or Madonna would love to have on their next album" and predicted that it would be a top twenty hit.[11] The song was the number-one break-out song on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play chart in mid-March,[12] and it has been listed on the Billboard HitPredictor list at number thirty-one.[13]

The single entered the UK Singles Chart at number sixty, one week after being released to iTunes, and it reached number twenty-nine after its physical release the following week. However, BBC Radio 1 chart show hosts JK & Joel accidentally played "Fly" instead of "With Love", and did not apologise over playing the wrong song.

It debuted at number forty-two, the highest debut of the week, on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in late March, with 32,500 downloads;[14] it has reached the top forty on the Pop 100. It debuted inside the top forty on the Ireland Top 50 singles.

Music video

The music video for the single premiered on MTV's Total Request Live on February 8, during "Spankin' New Music Week".[15] It debuted on the TRL countdown the next day at number nine, and it has reached number one on four subsequent countdowns.[16] The video also entered the Canadian MuchMusic Top 30 Countdown and is currently at 25. [17] A sixty-second clip of the video is being played on television channels as the commercial for Duff's fragrance With Love... Hilary Duff. The director of the video is Matthew Rolston.[18]

The video starts with Duff receiving a standing ovation for a performance. She goes backstage, where her posse hands her a bag, a coat and a hat. A man (played by Kellan Lutz) stands outside and follows her from the auditorium and into an old-fashioned hotel building. Duff sprays her perfume on her neck and begins a game of cat-and-mouse with the man. She reverses her coat and puts on a black wig and moves, giving her hat to an old man whose back is turned. She walks up the stairs and throws the coat off the railing, while tearing off her white dress to reveal black, and rips off the lower half of the dress. The man smells her coat and finally follows her into a lift, where they start to embrace. The video ends with the cables holding the elevator car breaking and the words "To Be Continued". Entertainment Weekly called the video "femme fatale-ish ... is like Madonna's "Justify My Love" for the TRL crowd".[19]

Remixes

Duff said she wanted producer Richard Vission, who remixed "Play with Fire", to remix "With Love". The remix was leaked on February 9 and only contains the vocals on the line "just do it with love, love, love, love." The remix can be heard on his MySpace.[32] Dave Audé, Jason Nevins, Joe Bermudez and Bimbo Jones have remixed "With Love". However, Jason Nevins's remix has been declined by the label. The Bimbo Jones remix was released on February 20. Two other remixes have been released on Duff's official MySpace. These remixes have been mixed by Castillo and Dave Audé vs. Richard Vission.[33] Housecrusherz remixed "With Love" in three formats: dub, club mix and remix edit. A shorter version of the A. Castillo remix is available for video viewing on AOL Music.
