Union City is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. As of the 2008 census, the city had a total population of 73,402 . It was incorporated in 1959, combining the communities of Alvarado, Decoto, and New Haven. Alvarado was the original county seat of Alameda County, and the site of the first county courthouse is a California Historical Landmark (#503).

Union City will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2009, with a year of memorable events planned for the residents and friends of the community.

The San Francisco Bay Area Flight 93 Memorial is in Sugar Mill Landing Park. It is the first completed monument in the United States designed specifically to honor the passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93, which was bound for San Francisco, but was hijacked and crashed in rural Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 49.9 km² (19.3 mi²), all land. The Niles Cone aquifer, managed by the Alameda County Water District, supplies much of the water consumed by Union City.It is adjacent to Fremont and Hayward.Fremont,Union City,Newark order by size are made up of Tri-Cities area.

Union City is served by the New Haven Unified School District and is home to one main High school James Logan High School, the most populous high school in Northern California and one comingle Continuation High school, Alternative High School Conley-Caraballo High School both these school are join by New Haven Adult school for Adult Education.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2008, there were 73,402 ,20,019 households, and 15,696 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,341.2/km² (3,473.0/mi²). There were 18,877 housing units at an average density of 378.6/km² (980.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 30.21% White, 6.70% African American, 0.53% Native American, 43.39% Asian, 0.91% Pacific Islander, 11.53% from other races, and 6.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 23.96% of the population.

There were 18,642 households out of which 45.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.6% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 15.8% were non-families. 11.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.57 and the average family size was 3.83. The median price of a house in Union City is about $400,000.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 32.7% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 8.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 98.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.0 males.

According to a 2006 estimate, the median income for a household in the city was $76,223, and the median income for a family was $82,717.[1] Males had a median income of $45,212 versus $35,085 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,890. About 4.8% of families and 6.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.0% of those under age 18 and 6.5% of those age 65 or over.


Local Shopping

Union Landing is Union City's highest profile retail entertainment center. Located next to Interstate 880 between Whipple Road and Alvarado Niles Road. At 105 acres, Union Landing includes Century 25 theater and Major Shopping stores such as Walmart ,Best Buy, Lowes, Babies R Us, Office Max,Lucky's and other retail shops. Dining includes restaurants such as Tony Romas, Texas Roadhouse, Chevy’s, Applebee’s and TGI Friday’s Chili’s. and SkyVenture Silicon Valley, a skydiving wind tunnel designed for the general public.

The Safeway MarketPlace, located at the corner of Alvarado-Niles Road and Decoto Road, features the well known names in retail, restaurants and neighborhood serving shops that include Rite Aid, The UPS Store, Blockbuster, Hometown Buffet, Thai Cuisine, Teriyaki Joe Bistro, Starbucks Coffee, Citi Financial Bank, and various apparel shops, nail and hair salons with a court yard water fountain.

The historic Old Alvarado downtown sits on the west side of Union City on Smith Street and Union City Blvd. and has array of small commercial business, retail shops, and eateries. The Caesar Chavez Park is just adjacent.

Along Smith Street and Watkins Avenue are historical Victorian homes, a small town post office, the Union City Historical Museum and the Loyola Commercial Building. Old Alvarado merchants produce events such as the Fall Festival, Friday night Jazz bands, Art shows, and the Farmers Market every weekend.

Union City is close in Nearby Hayward to the main campus of California State University of the East Bay formerly known as California State University, Hayward. California State University, East Bay is a public university within the California State University system. And Chabot College -is a two year community college that covers Union City,Castro Valley,Ashland, and other nearby Cities.


Transportation

Union City is served by Interstate 880 (Nimitz Freeway) and SR 238 (Mission Boulevard). Public transportation is served by rapid transit system BART with a station in town, the local bus system Union City Transit (originally The Flea) which serves the entire city, with mainline bus service supplemented by AC Transit. It is also served by Dumbarton Express, running from the BART station across the Dumbarton Bridge to Palo Alto. On November, 13, 2007, the City of Union City, BART and AC Transit officials broke ground a massive construction project that will transform the Union City BART Station into a spectacular, world-class, solar-powered, intermodal transit hub. Years in the planning, the vision for the Union City Intermodal Station and Downtown is that of a key connection point for commuters and other travelers -- a point where they will be able to board and transfer between BART, passenger rail (Capitol Corridor, Dumbarton Rail, ACE) and bus (AC Transit and Union City Transit) services. This green-friendly station will include a 16-bay bus facility with solar cells on a 700-foot long canopy, an expanded BART station and improved access for pedestrians, bicyclist, buses and autos. This phase is expected to be completed by 2010. Development of the Intermodal Station District will transform former industrial acreage adjacent to the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) station into a vibrant, intergrated Downtown neighborhoods that will enable residents to live, work, shop and play in the same area. A new public plaza will feature a fountain, terraced seating, and public art. Either a library or a fine arts pavilion is planned for the plaza. New housing development is underway in the Intermodal Station District which are all walkable to this site. Avalon Bay will be start site preparation for the construction of 438 apartments on the former Litke property in spring 2007. KB HOME is constructing 216 townhouses on the former PSSC property. Barry Swenson Builder is planning up to 1,154 housing units, 61,500 retail ready space fronting on 11 th Street, and 12,500 sq. ft of commercial space. Research and Development opportunities are available on the Shelton property, PSSC, and the former PG&E pipe yard.The Intermodal Station District Plan envisions a new compact, pedestrian and transit oriented community with housing, retail, office, and public uses next to the BART Station.

Nearby Hayward also has daily newspaper called the Daily Review, part of the Alameda Newspaper Group of newspapers in the Bay Area. Local television stations, AM and FM radio from Oakland and San Francisco reach Union City , and stations from San Jose, Sacramento and Salinas reach Hayward as well, as well as cable carrier, Comcast
