(13350) Gmelin is a main outer belt asteroid discovered on September 20, 1998 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory ( IAU code 809) of the European Southern Observatory in Chile .
The asteroid was named on September 19, 2005 after the German Siberian researcher and botanist Johann Georg Gmelin (1709–1755), who took part in the Second Kamchatka Expedition and based the knowledge gained on the Siberian flora .
