(1959) Karbyshev (also 1972 NB ; 1971 DN 1 ) is an asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on July 14, 1972 by the Ukrainian - Soviet astronomer Lyudmyla Shuravlowa at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj on the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea .
The asteroid was named after Dmitri Michailowitsch Karbyshev (1880-1945), an officer in the Imperial Russian Army , General of the Red Army , professor of the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces and belated hero of the Soviet Union . He was killed in the Mauthausen concentration camp .
