(21785) Méchain is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 21 September 1999 by Czech astronomer Miloš Tichý at Kleť Observatory ( IAU code 046) in Budweis (České Budějovice) in South Bohemia was discovered.
The asteroid was named after the French astronomer and geographer Pierre-François-André Méchain (1744-1804), who, as a friend and colleague of Charles Messier, contributed important observations to the catalog of astronomical objects he wrote. As a geographer, he took part in the meridian expedition in 1792 , which ultimately led to the construction of the ancient meter .
