(2309) Mr. Spock is an asteroid of the main asteroid belt discovered on August 16, 1971 by James B. Gibson .

properties

Mr. Spock moves from 2.7451 ( perihelion ) to 3.2790 ( aphelion ) astronomical units around the Sun in approximately 5.23 years . The orbit is inclined 10.985 ° to the ecliptic , the orbital eccentricity is 0.0886.

Mr. Spock has a mean diameter of about 13 miles and his albedo is estimated to be 0.1177.

The asteroid belongs to the Eos family , a group of asteroids which typically have large semiaxes from 2.95 to 3.1 AU, bounded inward by the Kirkwood gap of the 7: 3 resonance with Jupiter , and orbital inclinations between 8 ° and 12 °. The group is named after the asteroid (221) Eos . The family is believed to have emerged from a collision more than a billion years ago.

Naming

The asteroid was named in 1985 after the explorer's cat , which in turn was named after the Star Trek character Mr. Spock . The naming led to the fact that the International Astronomical Union , which authorizes the naming of celestial bodies, included a passage in its rules for naming asteroids that pet names are no longer desirable.
