(3782) Celle is a double asteroid of the inner main girdle .

discovery

The six-kilometer main asteroid was discovered by Poul Jensen on October 3, 1986 at the Brorfelde Observatory in Denmark .

Its natural satellite was discovered on September 18, 2001 through light curve observations by astronomers at the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope (VATT) in Arizona . Celle is orbited by its approximately 2.34 km satellite at a distance of approximately 18 km.

Physical Properties

Celle belongs to the asteroid family of the Vestoids . It is assumed that these were knocked out by a collision with the asteroid (4) Vesta , as they show high spectral similarities to each other. The spectral type according to the Tholen classification is therefore named V type after Vesta . Planetoids of this type consist mainly of silicates with an increased proportion of pyroxene minerals.

designation

The planetoid was named on February 18, 1992 after the town of Celle in Lower Saxony . The town of Celle has been a twin town of Holbæk since 1980 , the town near the Brorfelde observatory, where the asteroid was discovered. The city of Celle celebrated the “700 years young Celle” anniversary in 1992.
