Maze Runner is a science fiction thriller by Wes Ball , which was released on January 26th, 2018 in the US American cinemas, the elect in the death zone (original title Maze Runner: The Death Cure ) . It was released in German and German-Swiss cinemas on February 1, 2018, and in Austrian cinemas on February 2, 2018. The film is the third and final part of the The Chosen Trilogy after Maze Runner - The Chosen in the Labyrinth (2014) and Maze Runner - The Chosen in the Burning Desert (2015).

A few months have passed since the "right arm" was smashed and WCKD once again kidnapped Immune for their experiments, including Minho. In the meantime, Thomas’s group has obtained secret information about a prisoner being transferred. In a daring rescue operation, they attack a heavily guarded train, in which they suspect Minho. Although they manage to free some of the prisoners, they find out that Minho was not in the car that they flew out by the hijacked helicopter. You learn that the train was on its way to the so-called "Last City". According to Jorge, this is the headquarters of WCKD.
Contrary to Vince's plans, Thomas, Newt and Frypan secretly set out to free Minho from the clutches of WCKD. On their way, the three friends have to cross a tunnel in which they are attacked by innumerable "cranks", people infected with the fire virus. At the last moment, Jorge and Brenda appear and save her.
Meanwhile, the head of the research program, Ava Paige, and Teresa, who is now also involved in the program, persuade other leadership members of WCKD to extend the tests on the immune system. Teresa argues that only developing a cure would justify the sacrifices made.
At the same time, the captured Minho experiences scenarios from times of the “labyrinth” in a simulation. It becomes clear that the purpose of the labyrinths was to expose the immune system to high physical or psychological stress over a longer period of time, thereby creating fear in them, which triggers the development of antibodies against the burn virus in their blood. This made it possible for WCKD to generate a serum which, however, ultimately only delayed the outbreak of the virus in the organism.
The group around Thomas has meanwhile reached the “Last City”. In front of the gates they find themselves in a protesting crowd, which is waiting for entry and help from the “last city”. The protest is bloodily resolved by WCKD. The group realizes that it will be difficult to get to the highly secured city, which is quickly proven when the newcomers are kidnapped by a group of masked people.
The group is led to the accommodation of the masked men, where, to their surprise, one of the men turns out to be Gally, who was believed to be dead. After a short tussle, they are brought to the leader of the rebels. They team up with Lawrence, who is only prevented from turning into a crank by stolen serum. He suggests helping Thomas and his friends to liberate Minho if they in turn help the rebels to get to the "Last City". Using a secret route, they could enter the city unnoticed and paralyze the defense mechanisms. Gally, who discovered Teresa on a foray into the city, declares this to be the key to her endeavor to free Minho. They therefore plan to capture her. Shortly before leaving, Newt Thomas confesses that he has been infected with the virus and is therefore not immune. Thomas is more determined than ever and plans to get Newt a serum.
Thomas, Newt, and Gally enter town. They meet Teresa and take her prisoner. Back in the rebel quarters, Thomas convinces Teresa to take her to the WCKD headquarters.
Thomas, Newt and Gally, disguised as WCKD soldiers, arrive at headquarters together with Teresa. They reach the captured immunities, but Minho was isolated from them again. Gally stays with the immuns looking for a serum for Newt, while Thomas and Newt, along with Teresa, continue to search for Minho. A short time later, however, they are discovered by the WCKD security chief Janson. Teresa helps the two of them to escape and goes to the laboratory area.
In the meantime, Gally finds the serum he is looking for, hands over the captured immunities to Brenda, who she and Frypan bring to safety, and sets off in search of Thomas. Meanwhile, Thomas and Newt find Minho in the medical field, and they escape together.
At the same time, Teresa makes a crucial discovery in the laboratory. The abnormally good health of Brenda puzzled her, which is why she took a blood sample from Thomas with a used bandage in the rebel quarters. The examination of the blood shows that Thomas' antibodies are now able to fight the virus completely. She and Ava Paige then try to find Thomas.
Since Gally manipulated the WCKD computer system to free the immune system, Lawrence's rebels have now gained control of the city's defense systems. In a kamikaze action, Lawrence drives a car laden with explosives into the city gate. The rebels then succeed in infiltrating the city.
Gally finds Thomas, Newt, and a surprised Minho. As Newt's health deteriorates, Minho and Gally run to Brenda to get the serum. However, Newt begins to transform shortly after they leave. He attacks Thomas, then in a clear-minded moment asks him to kill him, and ultimately kills himself with a knife.
Teresa had previously asked Thomas over the loudspeaker to return to WCKD, as he was carrying the remedy and could thus save Newt. After Newt's death, Thomas accepts the situation and goes to headquarters. Shortly afterwards, Brenda and Minho arrive in front of the headquarters and find the lifeless Newt.
Arrived at the headquarters, Thomas meets Dr. Paige, who assures him that the experiments are finally over and that only he has to come with them to save humanity. Suddenly a shot is fired and Dr. Paige collapses. Janson, who turns out to be the shooter, knocks Thomas down.
When he wakes up, Teresa takes blood from him in the presence of Janson and prepares the remedy. It turns out that Janson himself is infected and is claiming the cure in order to decide who is worth saving. Teresa knocks Janson down after completing the cure. A fight breaks out in which Thomas is shot. The headquarters are now also being massively shelled by the rebels. Thomas and Teresa manage to overpower Janson, he is killed by Cranks and they flee to the roof of the now burning building. Thomas almost collapses as a result of his injury, Teresa hands him the cure and they kiss passionately. Unexpectedly, Jorge approaches in a helicopter, but cannot land because the building is now too unstable. Teresa drags the wounded Thomas to the helicopter. With the help of the inmates Jorge picked up earlier, she manages to lift Thomas into the helicopter. Teresa herself does not make it into the helicopter and is torn down with the collapsing building. Thomas faints.
The scene changes to Thomas' awakening on an island where the community has gathered. Thomas finds a suicide note from Newt in his belongings, in which he asks Thomas to take care of everyone.
The film ends with Thomas reading the names of deceased companions on a stone plaque similar to that in the first part of the trilogy, including those of Chuck, Newt, Winston, Alby, Zart, Jeff, Clint and Teresa. In the last shot, Thomas looks deeply lost in thought at the sea, holding the remedy in his hands.

Maze Runner - The Chosen in the Death Zone marks the end of the Maze Runner trilogy. Like the previous films, it is based on a book by the author James Dashner . The Death Cure was released in 2011. The book was adapted for the film by TS Nowlin . Directed by Wes Ball . The score was composed by John Paesano , who already worked in this capacity for Maze Runner - The Chosen in the Labyrinth . The soundtrack for the film comprises 22 pieces of music and was released by Sony Classical as a download on January 26, 2018 and on CD on February 9, 2018.
Filming began on March 14, 2016 in Vancouver . Filming in Cape Town continued from March 6, 2017 and ended on June 3, 2017. Gyula Pados acted as cameraman , with the ball already filmed Maze Runner - The Chosen in the Burning Desert .
The role of the fugitive Thomas was again taken over by Dylan O'Brien . After the main actor of the film was hit by a vehicle while filming on March 18, 2016 and was seriously injured and suffered a concussion, a facial fracture and lacerations, the filming had to be suspended for a long time.
In May 2017, a featurette for the film was presented as part of the MTV Movie & TV Awards . The first German-language trailer for the film followed at the end of September 2017.
Due to O'Brien's injury during filming, the theatrical release had to be postponed from early 2017 to early 2018. The film celebrated its world premiere on January 11, 2018 in Seoul. The film was released in Chinese and US cinemas on January 26, 2018 and in German cinemas on February 1, 2018.

The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film is recognizable as a completely unrealistic science fiction adventure for children and young people from the age of 12 . There are numerous tension and action scenes, but they are always balanced out by quieter passages. Individual scenes (e.g. during attacks by zombies ) can briefly challenge children from the age of 12, but a lasting impairment cannot be assumed: The unreal fantasy context makes it easier for them to maintain an emotional distance from the events. The extremely positive, heroic main characters and the happy ending also contribute to the relief. "

Birgit Roschy from epd Film says that even the overture in which teenage rebels in Che Guevara chic want to free the children trapped in a freight train with rusty jeeps has a great drive and delights with hand-made and imaginative action: “Be effective in the following a civil war-like scenario, the barracks of a broken rest of the world contrasted with tidy high-rise canyons. Georg Kammerer from Neues Deutschland thinks that it is noticeable negatively that only one young woman is allowed to play in the rather large ensemble of heroes around the protagonist Thomas.
