(4001) Ptolemaeus is a main belt asteroid that was discovered on August 2, 1949 by the German astronomer Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth from the State Observatory in Heidelberg-Königstuhl ( observatory code 024).

The asteroid was named after the Greek mathematician , geographer , astronomer , astrologer , music theorist and philosopher Claudius Ptolemy , whose three works on astronomy, geography and astrology in Europe were important extensive data collections and standard scientific works until the early modern period.
