(8758) Perdix is an asteroid of the outer main belt , which was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery came about as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory .

The asteroid belongs to the Hygiea family, a rather older group of asteroids, as is believed, the largest member of which is the asteroid (10) Hygiea .

The timeless (non- osculating ) orbital elements of (8758) Perdix are almost identical to those of eleven smaller ones (if one considers the absolute brightness of 14.2, 14.2, 14.4, 15.0, 15.1, 15, 3, 15.2, 15.9, 15.5, 15.9 and 16.1 compared to 13.9) asteroids (73500) 2002 RK 57 , (79161) 1993 FW 19 , (100663) 1997 WN 30 , ( 143522) 2003 EG 13 , (161216) 2002 VR 6 , (191999) 2005 XG 64 , (192205) 2007 JJ 27 , (280007) 2001 US 201 , (293556) 2007 HV 37 , (302430) 2002 CL 303 and (314590 ) 2006 AZ 18 .

(8758) Perdix was named on February 2, 1999 after the partridge , whose scientific name is Perdix perdix . At the time the asteroid was named, the partridge was on the Dutch and European Red Lists of Endangered Species .
