(8772) Minutus is an asteroid of the main inner belt that was discovered on September 29, 1973 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery was made during the 2nd Trojan survey, during which Tom Gehrels surveyed field plates recorded with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory at the University of Leiden , 13 years after the start of the Palomar-Leiden- Surveys .

The asteroid belongs to the Nysa group, a group of asteroids named after (44) Nysa (also called the Hertha family, after (135) Hertha ). The ageless (not osculating ) orbital elements of (8772) minutus are almost identical with those of the two smaller, when one of the absolute brightness starting from 16.6 and 17.3 versus 14.0, asteroids (208,707) 2002 JL 51 and ( 331581) 2001 SO 13 .

(8772) Minutus is after the Little Bittern named, whose scientific name Ixobrychus minutus is. At the time the asteroid was named on February 2, 1999, the bittern was on the Dutch and European Red List of Endangered Birds .
