Álvaro Corcuera
Álvaro Corcuera Martínez del Río LC (born July 22, 1957 in Mexico City , Mexico ; † June 30, 2014 there ) was a Catholic priest and from 2005 to 2014 Superior General of the Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ (LC) .
Life
Álvaro Corcuera visited the "Instituto Irlandés" in Mexico City. In 1969 he attended a language academy (later known as "Dublin Oak") in Ireland. In 1971 he became a founding member of the international youth organization ECYD (Educación, Cultura y Deporte), which the founder of the order of the Legionaries of Christ, Marcial Maciel, brought into being. In 1974 he joined the Regnum Christi apostolate as a consecrated lay member. From 1975 to 1979 he studied education at the Mexican Universidad Anáhuac . In 1979 he joined the religious order of the Legionaries of Christ and studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University and at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) in Rome.
In 1985 he received by Bishop Santos Abril y Castelló , the then apostolic nuncio in Bolivia, the diaconate , December 24, 1985 he received in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Rome by Cardinal Eduardo Martinez Somalo , the ordination .
Álvaro Corcuera was then rector of the Center for Higher Studies in Rome, since 1987 Regens of the Seminary of the Legionaries of Christ in Rome and from 1993 to 2000 first rector of the Regina Apostolorum Pontifical College in Rome. He was also secretary of the Committee of Rectors of the Pontifical Universities in Rome. In 2001 he was called to advise the Congregation for Bishops .
In January 2005 the Third Ordinary General Chapter of the Congregation elected him General Director of the Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ and the Regnum Christi Apostolic Movement as their Superior General and successor to the founder of the Order.
Since October 2012 he could no longer exercise his office as Superior General of the Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ for health reasons, which from then on was provisionally led by Sylvester Heereman LC. On February 6, 2014 he resigned his office and with the election of the new General Superior by the General Assembly, Eduardo Robles Gil Orvañanos LC took over the leadership of the Congregation. Corcuera died of cancer on June 30, 2014 in his native Mexico City.
