Älnur Mousayev attended a general education school in the former capital Alma-Ata and then studied geology at the Kazakh National Technical University . He completed his studies in 1976 as a graduate engineer and worked from 1976 to 1979 for the government in the geological office of South Kazakhstan . In 1979, Mousayev was called up for military service in the Soviet Army and graduated from the KGB University in Minsk the following year .

Between 1980 and 1986 he traveled several times as a counter-scout to Iraq to initiate business with Saddam Hussein and to deliver Soviet tanks. From 1986 to 1989 he held a management post in the 8th main department of the Interior Ministry of the USSR in Moscow and was awarded 2 medals and the Order of the Red Star .

In 1990 he returned to Kazakhstan and worked there until 1992 in various functions in the area of ​​economic security for the KGB. In 1992 and 1993 Alnur Mussayev headed the “Special Department of the General Procuratorate against Corruption at the Top of Power” and was awarded the “Order of Honorary Employee of the KGB”. From 1993 to 1994 he was head of the Interior Ministry's main department against corruption and organized crime.

From 1994 to 1996 Musayev was an advisor to Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev . In May 1997, he became chairman of the National Security Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the country's intelligence service. After a short break from September 1998 to August 1999, he re-headed the National Security Committee until May 2001. After the political crisis in autumn 2001, he resigned from all posts in 2002.

Condemnation and escape

In May 2007, Musayev and his former deputy, Rachat Aliyev, left Kazakhstan after falling out with the Kazakh president. In 2008, he was sentenced by the Republic of Kazakhstan to 15 years in prison for the kidnapping of two Nurbank managers. In March 2008, Mousayev and Aliyev were sentenced in absentia to 20 years in a prison camp for planning a coup. Extradition to Kazakhstan was twice refused by the Austrian authorities because the two Kazakhs could not be guaranteed a fair trial there.

In 2008, two kidnapping attempts were carried out on Älnur Mousayev in Vienna's 1st district , in which his partner suffered a serious facial injury in September. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the Fight against Terrorism identified five diplomats from the Kazakh embassy as alleged masterminds, who were subsequently withdrawn from Austria.

In June 2014, Älnur Mousayev was arrested in Vienna on the orders of the Vienna Public Prosecutor's Office. He was charged with murdering two Nurbank executives in February 2007. Mousayev stated that his persecution was politically motivated, that his staff and assistants were murdered in Kazakhstan and that his relatives were persecuted. In July 2015, Mousayev was fully acquitted of the double murder charge in a jury trial at the Vienna Regional Court.

Only Musayev has five of his own and two stepchildren. He lives in Austria.
