The Austrian Library Tbilisi was opened on May 2, 2000 in the Georgian capital and is one of currently 65 Austrian libraries abroad that are run by Austrian foreign cultural policy in cooperation with local institutions. It is institutionally affiliated with the State Ilia University .

The Austrian libraries abroad have been founded in 65 cities since 1986 on the initiative of the Austrian Foreign Ministry. The geographic focus is on Central, Southeastern and Eastern Europe. There are also libraries in Central Asia, Russia, Israel, Turkey and in the Caucasus region of Austria. The Austrian library in Tbilisi was opened in 2000 and at that time was the first Austrian library in the region. The aim is to convey Austrian literature, culture and language, to promote intercultural dialogue and to carry out scientific and cultural activities.

The Austria Library is located in a building of the State Ilia University and is looked after by employees of the university. The contact person for the Austrian Library in Georgia is the Austrian Embassy in Tbilisi, in Vienna the Austrian Library is looked after by the Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs , the Austrian Society for Literature and the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

Duration

The holdings of the Austrian Library Tbilisi include around 7,600 books, 400 audiovisual media and numerous periodicals. The majority of the holdings are German-language fiction and secondary literature on history, politics, literary studies, cultural studies and language teaching. The collection also includes translations of Austrian literature into Georgian. As in all 65 Austrian libraries, a "Liechtenstein shelf" has been in the library since 2003 in cooperation with the Principality of Liechtenstein . Since 2013, the Pro Helvetia cultural foundation has been equipping a "Swiss shelf" in the Austrian library in Tbilisi. To expand and update its holdings, the Austrian Library Tbilisi receives an annual budget for new acquisitions from the Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs.

Research in the holdings is possible via an online catalog . The use of the resources is open to all interested parties, a loan is possible at the loan conditions of the university library.

In addition to the classic library operations, the Austria Library carries out numerous other cultural activities. These include readings, exhibitions, scientific conferences and translation workshops. Concerts and theatrical performances (e.g. of plays by Jura Soyfer or Felix Mitterer's " Kein Platz für Idioten ") are also part of the program. Brigitte Hamann , Renate Welsh , Evelyn Grill , Matthias Loibner , Ulrike Längle , Ludwig Laher , Manfred Chobot , Jutta Brunsteiner, Markus Köhle and Helmuth Niederle have been guests so far . Events are also organized with cultural workers from Liechtenstein and Switzerland such as Iren Nigg, Hansjörg Quaderer, Annette Lory and Barbara Schibl. The Austria Library also regularly holds events in other Georgian cities (such as Zugdidi , Batumi , Oni or Kutaisi ) and thus also reaches the Georgian public outside the capital.

Lectures on Austrian history and culture as well as the political system of the Republic of Austria are regularly held by the Austria Library Tbilisi at the State Ilia University. The library is also a licensed examination center for acquiring the Austrian language diploma for German .
