Ćiril Kos

Ćiril Kos (born November 19, 1919 in Ribić Brijeg near Ivanec , Kingdom of Yugoslavia , today Croatia ; †  July 6, 2003 in Osijek , Croatia) was bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Đakovo-Osijek .

Life

Ćiril Kos was born in 1919 in Ribić Brijeg in Varaždin County . As a child, Kos and his parents moved to Slavonia in the town of Harkanovce . His high school education took place in Herzegovina , in the city of Široki Brijeg . The study of theology graduated from Kos at the Theological Faculty of Đakovo . Shortly before the age of 25, on July 9, 1944, he was ordained a priest in the Diocese of Đakovo and Syrmia, today the Archdiocese of Đakovo-Osijek . The solemn primacy took place on July 16, 1944 in his hometown of Harkanovci.

From August of the same year until the end of October 1944, Kos initially worked as a pastoral chaplain in Srijemska Mitrovica . During the Second World War he was also entrusted with the management of the Roman Catholic parish in Srijemska-Mitrovica. From 1946 to 1951 Ćiril Kos pastor who was parish of St. Matthew in Trnjani . After that, from 1951 to 1959, Kos was a spiritual leader in the theological convict of onakovo. Kos was sentenced to seven years in prison by the communist regime of Yugoslavia . He served this from November 5, 1962 to 1973 in the Stara Gradiška prison . After his imprisonment he took over the service as secretary in the ordinariate of Đakovo, there from 1973 to 1974 the duties of a capitular vicar . He was appointed bishop of the Diocese of Đakovo and Syrmia on February 6, 1974, at the age of 54. Cardinal State Secretary and Archbishop Mario Cagna donated Ćiril Kos the episcopal ordination on March 17, 1974 . In the Croatian Bishops' Conference he was active in various functions, including his many years of leadership of the commission for catechesis deserves special mention . On February 23, 1989 Ćiril Kos received an honorary doctorate honoris causa , awarded by the Catholic Faculty in Zagreb. Kos was altogether the fourth bishop of the Diocese of Đakovo and Syrmia . He served the episcopal ministry for 29 years, until his retirement on February 6, 1997. In 1996 he was awarded the Prince Trpimir Order .

Ćiril Kos died on July 6, 2003 at the Hospital of Osijek , at the age of 83 years and after 59 years of priestly service. His resting place is in the crypt of the bishops of Đakovo and Syrmia in the cathedral at Đakovo , where he was buried on July 8, 2003.
