Sarri-Kušuḫ

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sarri-Kušuḫ (Hittite Piyaššili ) was a Hittite viceroy of Karkemiš towards the end of the 14th century BC. Chr.

Piyaššili was the son of the Hittite king Suppiluliuma I. When that after the assassination of his son Zannanza of Hurrians had conquered fortress held Carchemish, he made Piyaššili there to the Viceroy, whose office was hereditary. Piyaššili assumed the Hurrian name Šarri-Kušuḫ, probably due to the Hurrian influence in Karkemiš.

Sarri-Kušuḫ supported his brother Muršili II during the critical time of his assumption of government. In the fourth year of his reign he led him to auxiliary troops to Arzawa , which Muršili conquered. In Muršili's seventh year of reign he fought together with General Kantuzzili an uprising in Nuḫašše . In Muršili's tenth year of reign, Šarri-Kušuḫ died in Kummani , where a festival in honor of the goddess Ḫepat of Kummani was to be held. He was followed by his son Šaḫurunuwa as viceroy of Karkemiš.
