Štefan Moyzes (also Štefan Moyses , German Stjepan Mojses ) (born October 24, 1797 in Veselé , Slovakia , then Kingdom of Hungary ; † July 5, 1869 in Sv. Kríž (now Žiar nad Hronom), Slovakia) was a Slovak bishop and politician .

Life

Moyzes studied in Pest from 1815 to 1819. Until his ordination in 1821 he was initially a private teacher, then a chaplain . In 1828 he was promoted to Dr. phil is doing his doctorate . In Pest he met the Slovak writers Ján Kollár and Martin Hamuljak .

From 1830 to 1847 he worked at the Rachtsakademie Agram as a professor of logic , metaphysics , philosophy and ethics . In 1837 he became a censor , but was suspected of Pan-Slavism and subsequently lost this position again in 1843.

In 1847 he became canon of the Agramer chapter, from which he was sent to the Reichstag in Pressburg. There he campaigned for the interests of the Croatians . In 1848 he became president of the Banal Council . As this he was called to negotiations in Vienna in 1849 and 1850 .

In 1851 he became Bishop of Neusohl . There he founded the Slovak newspaper Cyrill a Method and a teacher training institute.

After the founding of Matica slovenská , he became its first president in 1863.

The feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius on July 5th goes back to his efforts with the Pope . This day is a public holiday in Slovakia today.

In general, Moyze's policy was always oriented towards Vienna due to his stance in the Slovak national movement and the opposing Magyarization .

Appreciation

On the occasion of his 200th birthday, a 200 kroner coin was minted in 1997 by the Mincovňa Kremnica in Slovakia .
