γ-Terpinene is a naturally occurring chemical compound, in the pure state a colorless, pine-like smelling oil that is contained in many essential oils , especially citrus fruits and aromatic plants . Chemically it is a cyclic monoterpenic hydrocarbon with the backbone of p-menthane and is isomeric with other terpinenes . It differs from α-terpinene in that it has a less lemon-like, softer aroma. γ-terpinene has an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effect. It can be made from p- cymene and oxidizes to this in air. γ-terpinene inhibits the enzymes acetylcholinesterase and aldose reductase .

Occurrence

lemon

Apart from essential lemon oil and lime oil , γ-terpinene is found in oil from caraway , cumin , ajwain , stone mint , coriander , marjoram ; in thyme oil , bergamot oil , cedar leaves , oregano and nutmeg .
