'54, '74, '90, 2006 is a song by German indie rock - group Sportfreunde Stiller . It is included on their studio album You Have to Win Zweikampf . In terms of content, the song deals with Germany's hoped-for win at the 2006 World Cup . The music video shows the band performing alongside photos showing World Cup wins in 1954, 1974 and 1990.

With '54, '74, '90, 2006 the Sportfreunde Stiller were able to reach number one in the German charts for the first time. They stayed at the top for three weeks and on the hit list for a total of 37 weeks. The single was also able to book a chart position in Austria by entering the 31st place. '54, '74, '90, 2006 stayed in the Swiss charts for eight weeks.

criticism

Benjamin Fuchs from laut.de described the song as a “roaring number for the student beer tent”. He was "not particularly ingenious, but also not as underground as some would lead you to believe." Gregory McIntosh from Allmusic thought the track was the best of You Have to Win duels . David Bluhm from Gaesteliste.de said that some of the songs from the album would give cause for "shouting along", especially '54, '74, '90, '2006 . The song was "definitely stadium format".

Other versions

  • Shortly after the German semi-final defeat at the 2006 World Cup, the lyrics of the song were slightly changed to read '54, '74, '90, 2010 on the radio with a view to the next World Cup . On the re-release of the album You Have to Win Zweikampf published on August 18, 2006, this song is included as the twelfth track. An acoustic version can be found on MTV Unplugged in New York from 2009.
  • For the European Football Championship in 2008 , Sportfreunde Stiller published the song on the Internet as '72, '80, '96, 2008 (alluding to the German European Championship titles in 1972, 1980 and 1996) and played it in some live performances.
