MTV Unplugged in New York is the second live album by the German indie pop band Sportfreunde Stiller .

The recordings were made during a concert of the MTV Unplugged series in the Bavaria Film Studios in Munich. Sportfreunde Stiller are the sixth German band to record an MTV Unplugged . The concert, which took place on January 17, 2009, was broadcast on May 21, 2009 in a shortened version on MTV . The CD was released a day later. The uncut version was finally broadcast on MTV when the DVD was released on July 17, 2009.

Emergence

Preparations for the concert began in July 2008. At first, the sports fans listened to their own albums and rehearsed the pieces of music on them to decide which should be played at the unplugged concert. In total, the band prepared for the concert for six months, including a week in a mountain hut near the ski jump in Oberstdorf . The new version of the piece of music was created 7 days, 7 nights . Rüdiger Linhof learned to play the double bass in these six months. The band's role models were the two unplugged concerts by the Doctors ( Rock 'n' Roll secondary school ) and Nirvana ( MTV Unplugged in New York ).

Backdrop

In search of a location for the MTV Unplugged concert, the Sportfreunde Stiller looked at various locations, with the number of locations viewed varying from 25 to over 40 depending on the interview. After they hadn't found a suitable location after a long search, director Uwe Flade came up with the idea for the New York setting in the “Bavaria Filmstudios” . They expanded this backdrop with various props of their own, such as the fictional record store Rüde Records and the lanterns. The idea for an MTV Unplugged in New York came up through the backdrop . The theme of "New York" can be found not only in the setting, but also in the clothing of the musicians. When choosing their clothes, Sportfreunde Stiller oriented themselves towards what they themselves said, “gangster street style [...] from the end of the 1960s” . The wind instruments are dressed like construction workers , the strings like stewardesses and the choir like a “street gang with baseball jackets” . They also named the street backdrop "Acoustic Avenue" .

A compliment (May 15, 2009)

The piece of music has been rearranged compared to the version on The Good Side with strings and piano. Towards the end of the song, the audience sings the chorus twice. The maxi CD also contains an Italian version of the title under the name Un Complimento . This version was specially made for the movie Maria, he doesn't like it! recorded.

I've never been to New York (September 11, 2009)

I've never been to New York is the second cover song on the album. Since Udo Jürgens had his own appearance on the day of the concert, it was not possible for him to appear live. As a result, it was recorded in a hotel room in Munich and played on the video screen on the Rüde Records backdrop during the unplugged appearance .

Never Let Go of Me (January 15, 2010)

Like the songs Hallo Du and Supersonnig, this song was specially written for the concert and its recording. For the single, the title was recorded again unplugged as a new studio version.

Me, Roque (May 14, 2010)

This single was only released digitally and was therefore not placed in the single charts. The single also features the two new tracks produced in April 2010, Ohne dich Liebe and Unterwegs .

Other songs

'54, '74, '90, 2010

They played the piece of music '54, '74, '90, 2010 with a barrel organ . For Sportfreunde Stiller it was important that this song got a new look and, through the use of a barrel organ, irony. Through the earlier version '54, '74, '90, 2006 of the song the Sportfreunde Stiller became known to a wider public.

Drive into the countryside

This song is the oldest of the pieces of music played. The original version is on the EP Do what you want - I'm going now! published in 1996.

Rock'N'Roll Queen

The song is a cover song by The Subways , whose members Billy Lunn and Charlotte Cooper appear as guest musicians on this cover. Billy Lunn sings a verse in German.

7 days, 7 nights

According to Florian Weber, the song is "a completely changed song" . Peter Brugger said about the song in an interview: “It's almost Brecht style and at the end it's a kind of polka , where we get faster and faster and everything ends in total madness. The song also has a cello framework that marches along. "
