(11588) Gottfriedkeller is an asteroid of the outer main belt , which was discovered by the German astronomer Freimut Börngen on October 28, 1994 at the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg ( IAU code 033).
The asteroid belongs to the Hygiea family, a rather older group of asteroids, as is believed, the largest member of which is the asteroid (10) Hygiea .
(11588) Gottfriedkeller was named on May 23, 2000 after the Swiss author Gottfried Keller . The Swiss astronomer Markus Griesser at the Eschenberg observatory in Winterthur measured 14,000 positions of 1357 asteroids from 1998 to 2005 for more precise orbit determination, whereby on August 8, 1999, UZ 12 was the first asteroid discovered in Tautenburg that Markus Griesser was able to observe. Since both Markus Griesser and Freimut Börngen appreciate Gottfried Keller, Börngen suggested to the International Astronomical Union (IAU) that the asteroid be named after the “great Swiss poet from the 19th century”.
