(11753) Geoffburbidge is an asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery was made as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory ( IAU code 675) .

The asteroid belongs to the Hygiea family, a rather older group of asteroids, as is believed, the largest member of which is the asteroid (10) Hygiea .

(11753) Geoffburbidge was named on March 6, 2004 after the British-American astrophysicist Geoffrey Burbidge (1925-2010), who in 1957 together with his wife Margaret Burbidge , William Alfred Fowler and Fred Hoyle the B2FH theory for the origin of the light elements Nuclear fusion in stars ( nucleosynthesis ).
