(14876) Dampier is an asteroid of the inner main belt , which was discovered on November 18, 1990 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory in Chile ( IAU code 809).
Mean distance from the Sun ( major semiaxis ), eccentricity and inclination of the orbit plane of the asteroid correspond roughly to the Vesta family , a large group of asteroids named after (4) Vesta , the second largest asteroid and third largest celestial body in the main belt.
(14876) Dampier was named on June 2, 2015 after the British three-time circumnavigator and explorer William Dampier (1651-1715).
