(16674) Birkeland is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 16 January 1994 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst and his French colleague Christian Pollas the Observatoire de Calern ( IAU code was discovered 910).
The asteroid was named on July 26, 2010 after the Norwegian physicist Kristian Olaf Birkeland (1867-1917), who studied the aurora borealis intensively from the mid-1890s . He has been nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physics seven times without ever receiving the coveted award.
