(1788) Kiess is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 25 July 1952 by astronomers of the Indiana Asteroid Program at Goethe Link Observatory in Brooklyn in the State of Indiana was discovered.
The asteroid belongs to the Themis family, a group of asteroids named after (24) Themis .
(1788) Kiess was named after the American astronomer Carl C. Kiess (1887–1967).
