(186835) Normanspinrad is an asteroid of the main inner belt discovered on March 27, 2004 by the French astronomer Bernard Christophe at the Saint-Sulpice observatory ( IAU code 947) in Saint-Sulpice , canton Noailles .
It is believed that (186835) Normanspinrad could more broadly belong to the Vesta family, a large group of asteroids named after (4) Vesta , the second largest asteroid and third largest celestial body in the main belt. The timeless (non- osculating ) orbital elements of (186835) Normanspinrad are almost identical to those of the larger one, assuming the absolute brightness of 15.3 compared to rounded up 16.9 mag, asteroids (23740) 1998 CP 3 .
(186835) Normanspinrad was named by Bernard Christophe after the American science fiction author Norman Spinrad . The name became generally valid through publication by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) on February 18, 2011. The asteroid (3207) Spinrad, however, was named in 1991 after the astronomer Hyron Spinrad .
