(2202) Pele is an asteroid of the Cupid type , which was discovered on September 7, 1972 by Arnold R. Klemola at the Lick Observatory ( IAU observatory code 662) on Mount Hamilton .

The asteroid was named after Pele , the Polynesian goddess of fire, who, according to Hawaiian belief, resides in the Halemaʻumaʻu crater of Kīlauea .
