(22644) Matejbel is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 27 July 1998 by the astronomer Petr Pravec and Ulrika Babiaková at the Czech ondřejov observatory ( IAU code was discovered 557).

The asteroid is named after the Slovak historian , theologian and educator Matej Bel (1684–1749), who translated the Bible into the Czech and Bohemian languages ​​and was given by Emperor Charles VI. was ennobled and appointed historian. The University of Banská Bystrica , founded in 1992, bears his name.
