(30698) Hippocoon is an asteroid belonging to the group of Jupiter Trojans . This describes asteroids that move around the sun on the Lagrange points on Jupiter's orbit .

(30698) Hippokoon was discovered on October 16, 1977 by the Dutch astronomers Cornelis Johannes van Houten , Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels at the Palomar Observatory . It is assigned to the Lagrangian point L 5 .

The asteroid is named after Hippocoon , the cousin of the Thracian king Rhesus , who fought on the side of Troy in the Trojan War .
