(3229) Solnhofen is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on August 9, 1916 by the Danish astronomer Holger Thiele in the observatory in Hamburg - Bergedorf .

The asteroid was named after the municipality of Solnhofen in the central Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen , which is particularly known for its limestone deposits and fossil finds.
