(3587) Descartes is an asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on September 8, 1981 by the Ukrainian - Soviet astronomer Lyudmyla Shuravlowa at the branch of the Crimean Observatory ( IAU code 095) in Nautschnyj .
The asteroid was named after the French philosopher , mathematician and natural scientist René Descartes (1596–1650), who is considered the founder of modern early modern rationalism and analytical geometry .
