(38628) Huya 1 is a moon of the trans-Neptunian object (38628) Huya , which is classified as Plutino in terms of orbital dynamics . The companion is about half the diameter of the mother planetoid. Due to its relative size, it can also be understood as part of a double asteroid system.

Discovery and naming

(38628) Huya 1 was discovered on May 6, 2012 by a team of astronomers consisting of Keith Noll, Will Grundy, Hilke Schlichting, Ruth Murray-Clay and Susan Benecchi (-Kern) on images of Huya with the Hubble Space Telescope , also on May 6, 2012. The find was confirmed by further examinations of further Hubble recordings from June 30th / 1st. Confirmed July 2012. The discovery was announced on July 12, 2012, the moon was given the provisional designation S / 2012 (38628) 1 . (As of March 2, 2019)

Track properties

(38628) Huya 1 orbits the common barycenter in an elliptical orbit at an average distance of 1740 km from the asteroid (8.57 Huya - or 16.34 S / 2012 (38628) 1 radii) and takes 3 days and 4 hours 48 minutes. The orbital eccentricity and inclination are currently unknown.

size

The diameter of (38628) Huya 1 is currently estimated at 213 km, based on an estimated reflectivity of 8.3%, analogous to the mother planetoid. The discovery of the moon had an influence on the determination of the size of the mother planetoid, which according to current estimates is 406 km in size. This means that (38628) Huya 1 should have 52.5% of the diameter of Huya. The mass of the system has not yet been calculated. The apparent magnitude of (38628) Huya 1 is 21.6  m .
