(4674) Pauling is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 2 May 1989 by the American US astronomer Eleanor Helin at Palomar Observatory ( IAU code 675) in California was discovered.

In March 2004, astronomers at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) discovered that the asteroid had a natural satellite. This moon with the designation S / 2004 (4674) 1 has a diameter of about 2.5 km and orbits Pauling at a distance of 250 km.

The celestial body is named after the American chemist Linus Pauling (1901-1994), who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954 and the 1962 Nobel Peace Prize in 1963 .
