(4837) Bickerton is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 30 June 1989 by the New Zealand astronomer Alan C. Gilmore and Pamela Margaret Kilmartin at Mt John University Observatory ( IAU code was discovered 474).
The asteroid was named after Alexander W. Bickerton , the first professor of chemistry at Canterbury College (now: University of Canterbury ) and teacher of Ernest Rutherford .
