(51829) Williemccool is an asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on July 21, 2001 by the American astronomer Eleanor Helin , on recordings of the Near Earth Asteroid Tracking (NEAT) project, which were recorded with the 120 cm Oschin-Schmidt- Telescope of the Palomar Observatory ( IAU code 644) in California .
It was named after the American astronaut William Cameron McCool , who was killed in the accident on the space shuttle Columbia on February 1, 2003. Asteroids were named after all members of the Columbia crew: after Rick Douglas Husband (51823) Rickhusband , after Michael Philip Anderson (51824) Mikeanderson , after David McDowell Brown (51825) Davidbrown , after Kalpana Chawla (51826) Kalpanachawla , after Laurel Blair Salton Clark (51827) Laurelclark and after Ilan Ramon (51828) Ilanramon .
